The story so far
Hi, my name's Dustin, I'm a college student w/too much time on my hands (what else could I be?), and this is a site devoted to a... remarkable little blog I started reading this summer, The Iraq War Was Wrong Blog. Most people think it's satire, but some aren't convinced, you make the call. Confusion abounds, people don't even know what to think about the many weird commenters there who sometimes speak in eerily the same style ("daisythelamb", "Pastorius", etc.) Are they real? Are they the alter egos of "iraqwarwrong", or "The Proprietor" as he/she sometimes styles himself? Well, I have my answer (I think they're all (mostly) real), but you decide.
What I'd like to do with this blog is simple: Sort it all out.
Here's the deal. This post is the first post. The second post will be the Master Post. It stays on top. It contains data which is relevant to the Iraq War Was universe. You can make comments below it, correcting this data, or suggesting new data, as you think appropriate. If it looks right (please source), from time to time I'll come along, add it to the Master Post & update everything. Be aware that I do, myself, subscribe to the Satire Hypothesis, so contributions based on the idea that IWW is real/sincere will not make the cut.
Eventually I do hope to open this up & make this a Team Blog to get others involved in the updating of the Master Post. If you're interested in being a Team member let me know. I'll have to be able to trust you however.
To get things started I'd like to suggest the following template for the Master Post,
- Cast of characters
- Bio of IWW, the character
- Who's behind IWW?: Speculation and Profiling
-The Cast of characters is where we post information we know about each apparent individual and/or IWW alter ego in the Iraq War Was universe - this includes IWW commenters and IWW's seeming... friends. Are they real? Fake? Have their own blog? This section is for posting our best info on this subject.
Examples of entries which can go here...
iraqwarwrong: Pseudonym (obviously). Nicknames: IWW, IWR, The Proprietor. Fake persona(?), always in character. Blogs at The Iraq War Was Wrong Blog. True allegiance: Presumably pro-war (Satire Hypothesis). Alter ego of: Treacher?, Frank J.?. Known alter egos: none. Bio sketch: see Bio section.
Jim: Pseudonym but could AFAIK be real first name. Nicknames: just Jim. Fake persona, always in character. No known blogs. True allegiance: Presumably pro-war. Alter ego of: Treacher? Known alter egos: none. Bio sketch: college student continually taking "lit crit" class.
Pastorius: Pseudonym (dead musician). Nicknames: Jaco Pastorius, Jaco. Real persona, sometimes fakes IWW style. Blogs at CUANAS, now under alter ego's name. True allegiance: pro-war (see CUANAS). Alter ego of: Nobody (primary blogger at CUANAS). Known alter egos: Screaming Memes. Bio sketch: Real persona opposed to anti-Semitism. Fake persona ("Jaco") based on the dead bass player, stories of crazy partying &c.
Screaming Memes: ....
-The IWW Bio section is for gathering and sorting information about the Biography of IWW the character. Where's "he" from? Is he a he at all (the debate rages - but was there an early slipup? or is the answer obvious?). How old? Likes/dislikes? Living situation? Education? To be canon, all IWW Bio information must come from (1) an IWW blog post, (2) an IWW comment to his/her blog, or (3) IWW comment to some other blog.
-Lives in an apartment.
-Roommate's name is Phung, Asian & Buddhist, who likes baseball.
-Downstairs neighbor is named Arun, probably Indian, a pre-med student.
-Once worked for Google, apparently emptying the trash.
-Finally, the Speculation/Profiling section is for trying to determine who's writing this daft thing. Is it really Jim Treacher, as IWW is fond of so often denying? Is it Frank J. or someone who knows Frank J. (my current theory/hunch - check out how IWW first hit the scene)? Is it Steven den Beste? The reason this is speculation is because one must read between the lines of IWW's posts; since it is widely (though not universally) agreed that IWW is a satire, if IWW writes "I once lived in Louisiana" in a blog post, that is not sufficient reason to think that the person behind IWW lived in Louisiana, since we all pretty much think he/she's lying about almost everything. But what does it say about the real IWW?
-Seems to have familiarity with rock/pop music from about 1980-current.
-Presumably conservative and pro-war (Satire Hypothesis).
-Numerous allusions to baseball points to being, not faking, a baseball fan.
And of course in the real Outline each data point would eventually be associated with some appropriate link to the source.
So if you want to help waste time with me, go and comment on the Master Post NOW. :-)
